History of Bayahibe

Bayahibe has remained populated since prehistoric times, which is not surprising due to the privilege of its location. freshwater springs, an excellent bay to be used as an anchorage, an abundance of coral reefs populated by fish, mollusks and crustaceans, the terrestrial area with mangroves and areas susceptible to cultivation.
The first time Europeans visited the Bayahibe area was between September 14 and 15, 1494.

Christopher Columbus, who had just explored the islands of Cuba and Jamaica, during the course of his second voyage to America, decided to reconnoiter the southern coast of Hispaniola. On September 14 he arrived on the island of Labanea, giving her the name of Catalina in honor of the daughter of the Catholic Monarchs. The next day it is recorded that he arrived at Adamanay Island, which his traveling companion, Miguel de Cunneo named Bella Savonese, originating the name of Saona, as it is known today.
